Questions, answered quickly

Short answers about members, roles, the map, battery use and privacy. Longer walkthroughs live in our guides.

Getting started

How do I add someone as a member?

In the app tap Add member, pick the role you are adding them as, enter a name for them, and share the invite code you get — it stays active for two days. On their phone they tap Add member → Have a code?, enter it, and you are connected.

Do we all need the same kind of phone?

No. Find Me works the same on iPhone and Android, and your members can use either. See sharing your location on iPhone and Android for the details.

Which permissions does the app need?

Background location — Always on iOS, Allow all the time on Android — plus notifications for alerts. Without background permission the map only updates while the app is open on screen.

Members and roles

What are roles, and what do they change?

When you invite someone you choose the role you are adding them as — Parent, Child, Loved One, Friend or Colleague. The role decides who can see whom: Loved One, Friend and Colleague are mutual, while parent and child start out one-way.

Can my child see my location?

Not until you allow it. A member added as a child is visible to their parent straight away, but the parent stays hidden from the child until the parent turns sharing on for them in the app. Chat works in both directions from the start.

Can I stop sharing with just one member?

Yes — open that member and tap Stop sharing location. They stay in your list and you keep seeing them if your role allows, but they stop receiving your position. One exception: a member added as a child cannot switch off sharing with their parent.

How do I remove someone completely?

Delete the member in the app. The connection disappears for both of you and neither side receives new positions.

Location and the map

How accurate is the location?

Outdoors with a clear sky, typically within a few metres. Indoors, in dense city centres or underground, the phone falls back to Wi-Fi and cell towers and accuracy drops — the map shows a wider accuracy radius when the position is less certain.

How often does the location update?

Continuously while someone is moving, and much less often once they have stopped — a phone sitting still on a desk has nothing new to report. That is what keeps battery use low.

Why is a member's location old or not moving?

Usually the phone is off or out of coverage, background location permission was downgraded to “While Using”, or battery-saver mode has suspended the app. Checking the permission on that phone fixes it most of the time.

What is a Place, and how do alerts work?

A Place is a spot on the map you name yourself — home, school, work. When someone arrives at or leaves one, the members who can see them get a notification, so nobody has to watch the map.

Can I see where someone has been today?

Yes, for the members whose location you can see. Each of them has a history timeline showing the day's stops and trips — and the same is true of you for whoever can see you.

Battery

Does Find Me drain the battery?

The app uses the phone's low-power location services and reports position changes rather than polling GPS non-stop. Expect a few percent over a day of normal use.

Will I know if someone's phone is about to die?

Yes — your members get a low-battery alert, so a dot that stops moving is never a mystery.

Privacy and safety

Who can see my location?

Only the members you accepted, and only in the direction their role allows. Location is never public, never shown to other users, and never sold to advertisers. See our privacy policy for the specifics.

Can somebody add me without my knowing?

No. A connection only exists after you enter that person's invite code on your own phone and grant the location permission yourself, and both iOS and Android show an indicator while an app uses your position in the background.

How do I stop sharing altogether?

Stop sharing with each member, delete the members you no longer want, or revoke the location permission in your phone's settings. Any of the three stops new positions leaving your phone.

Account

How do I delete my account and data?

Follow the steps on our account deletion page. Deleting the account removes your profile and location history.
